The "Smells like Candles" photo series, the goal was visually capture three aspects of a candle. In this case, the mood, atmosphere, and scent that make up a candle are captured in the series.
If there is anything that yoga does is it elevates your mood. Like yoga, candles are often known for their calming properties. So then the question became, how do you capture a calming mood? With lots of self-care posts out in the social media world, the first idea became yoga. Simple, a yoga mat, a plant (proven to have one in your home can elevate your mood!), and obvious candle. The final piece required having a little fun experimenting with gels on softbox lighting. Purple became the final choice of color for its also calming effect and connection to lavender.
For this delicious photo, scent was seen. When walking into a welcoming home we typically smell a good dinner, cleanliness or a candle! For this photoshoot, it seemed appropriate to combine cooking and the scent of a candle by replacing the food with them. The shot has a strong emphasis on setup design, mostly to prevent the photo from being taken out of context. This was to show that the food was intended to be replaced. The photo was shot using a Nikon 3500 and softbox overhead lighting.
The dinner photo fits under atmosphere. This idea came from romantic dinner settings shown in movies and/or high end restaurants, most of the time there's a candle. When people talk about atmospheres it mostly deals with going out. Most people will rate restaurants on food and atmosphere and candles do a great job in setting an atmosphere. The overall setup of this photo seemed pretty easy until it came down to the lighting. The idea was to have the flames showing in contrast to the black background. This was successful after a few changes in light power and aperture.
